Cologne Old Town

Cologne's Old Town is the historic heart of the cathedral city — over 2,000 years of history between the Rhine promenade, Romanesque churches, brewery taverns and winding lanes.

Cologne’s Old Town is the historic heart of the cathedral city and one of the most visited districts in Germany. Between the Rhine promenade, Romanesque churches, traditional brewery taverns and winding lanes, it combines more than 2,000 years of history with lively Rhineland culture. Whether for a day trip, a weekend or a longer stay, the Old Town is the ideal base from which to experience Cologne authentically.

The history of Cologne’s Old Town

The origins of the Old Town go back to Roman times. In AD 50, Cologne was elevated to the Roman colony „Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium“, and traces of this era can still be discovered today. In the Middle Ages, Cologne grew into one of the largest and wealthiest cities in Europe; numerous churches, squares and trading streets bear witness to this golden age. In the Second World War, a large part of the Old Town was destroyed. The reconstruction was partly based on historic models, so that the district today offers a mix of rebuilt façades, originally preserved buildings and modern architecture.

Sights in Cologne’s Old Town

The most important highlights include:

  • Groß St. Martin – a striking Romanesque church near the Rhine
  • the Historic City Hall – one of the oldest town halls in Germany
  • the Fish Market (Fischmarkt) with its colourful gabled houses
  • the Rhine promenade with views of the cathedral and the Hohenzollern Bridge
  • Alter Markt and Heumarkt – central squares with a historic atmosphere

Many of these sights in Cologne are only a few minutes‘ walk apart and combine ideally on a single tour.

Culture, brewery taverns and Cologne’s way of life

The Old Town is not just a historic district, but also the centre of Cologne’s way of life. In traditional brewery taverns, Kölsch is served — always freshly tapped and presented in slim glasses. Typical dishes such as Himmel un Ääd (black pudding with mashed potato and apple) or Rhenish Sauerbraten are as much a part of the experience as the open, sociable atmosphere. Street musicians, small boutiques and seasonal events such as Christmas markets or carnival add to the scene.

Practical information for visitors

Cologne’s Old Town is just a few minutes‘ walk from the main station, and several tram and bus lines stop nearby. Parking is limited, so arriving by public transport is recommended. For a comprehensive impression, allow at least half a day; if you plan to include museums or guided tours, set aside more time.

Attractions around the Old Town

Directly adjacent are other well-known sights such as Cologne Cathedral, Museum Ludwig and the Chocolate Museum in the Rheinauhafen. Thanks to the central location, several highlights are easy to combine. Staying centrally lets you explore the Old Town flexibly — whether for an early walk along the Rhine or a relaxed evening in one of the traditional brewery taverns.
