From the Middle Ages to today – how Cologne Cathedral came to be

Construction of Cologne Cathedral began in 1248 – at a time when Cologne was one of the most important trading cities in Europe. The aim was to build a monumental cathedral that would give the relics of the Three Kings a worthy home. To this day they rest in the elaborately crafted Shrine of the Three Kings inside the cathedral.

Architecturally, the builders took their cue from the great cathedrals of France, in particular Amiens and Paris. The delicate tracery windows, the imposing nave and the mighty flying buttresses are characteristic. Despite ambitious plans, building work came to a halt in the 16th century – political, financial and social changes prevented its completion.

It was not until the 19th century that the original plans were taken up again. Using modern techniques and based on medieval construction drawings, the project was finally completed. The cathedral was finished in 1880 – after a construction period of more than 600 years. With towers 157 metres high and an overall length of 144 metres, it is today one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

The cathedral’s history is therefore not only an architectural chapter, but also a mirror of European cultural and urban development.

A spiritual centre with a living tradition

To this day, Cologne Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne and an active centre of the Catholic faith. Several services are held every day – from early Mass to the solemn High Mass. Particularly worth highlighting is the Chapter Mass on the first Sunday of the month, which is celebrated in Latin. • Location: Cologne Cathedral sits right next to the main station, making it one of the most easily accessible sights in Germany.
