Hohenzollern Bridge

The Hohenzollern Bridge is more than a link between the two banks of the Rhine — right next to the cathedral, with a famous view, a Rhine panorama and thousands of love padlocks.

The Hohenzollern Bridge in Cologne is more than just a link between the two banks of the Rhine. It is one of those places you experience almost automatically in Cologne — often without consciously planning to. Right next to the cathedral, it connects the Old Town with Deutz and is one of the best-known bridges in Germany.

While trains pass by continuously in the background, visitors from all over the world make their way along the footpaths. Many stop to look out over the Rhine, or search among the thousands of padlocks for a small personal token.

Why is a walk across the Hohenzollern Bridge worth it?

A walk across the bridge is simple — and yet special, above all because of the perspective.

  • an unobstructed view of Cologne Cathedral
  • a panorama over the Rhine and the Old Town
  • the famous love padlocks along the railings
  • a location right by the main station

In the evening hours in particular, the bridge develops its special charm. As the light softens and the cathedral is slowly illuminated, a calm, almost special atmosphere emerges.

Where is the best view?

If you are specifically looking for a good photo spot, the middle of the bridge is the ideal place. From there you see the cathedral head-on and unobstructed, the Old Town along the riverbank, and the Rhine with its passing boats. Early in the morning or late in the evening it is usually much quieter, and the light at these times makes for especially lovely shots.

The padlocks – a symbol of connection

The padlocks have become a fixed part of the cityscape. Couples attach a padlock here and then throw the key into the Rhine. This custom has established itself since around 2008; at first the padlocks were still removed, but today they are simply part of the bridge. Tens of thousands now hang here — each with its own story. If you would like to attach one yourself, bring it ready prepared, as there are no official sales points on site.

A look into the history

Today’s bridge is not identical to its original state. In the past it was an elaborately designed steel construction with representative elements, including equestrian statues of Prussian rulers. In the Second World War the bridge was severely damaged and finally blown up. It was rebuilt in a simplified form, though some historic elements were preserved — the well-known equestrian statues still stand at the western bridgehead today and recall the original architecture.

When was it built?

The original bridge dates from 1911. At the time it replaced an older Rhine bridge and was considered a significant technical achievement. After its reconstruction it became one of the most heavily used railway bridges in Europe.

How to get to the Hohenzollern Bridge

The bridge is centrally located and very easy to reach: right by Cologne main station, a few steps from the cathedral, within walking distance of the Old Town and close to the riverbank. You can easily fit the Hohenzollern Bridge into any city walk.
